Springs Hill WSC Municipal Water Company and EPASprings Hill WSC Municipal Water Report Info
Southern Utilities Company, Inc. is a fourth generation family-owned HVAC equipment and supply house. We are a stocking distributor of pumps, motors and controls. Our current sales staff has over 230 combined years of experience in supplying HVAC needs for both government and commercial customers.
The company was founded by Stephen Ambrose Gorman in 1932, initially as a distributor of Bell and Gossett products serving from the Mason Dixon Line to the Florida Keys. Stephen was a Catholic University of America graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve Flying Corps.
After his untimely passing in April 1935, his wife Mary took over leadership. For twelve years, Mary ran the business from her home with help from one employee and her children. She kept inventory in her basement and received deliveries at the back door. Washington Gas would direct pump-seeking customers to Mary's door, as she was supporting her four children while running the business.
In 1947, Mary's eldest son Stephen Francis joined full-time. By 1958, the DC location moved from their home on 39th St NW to its current 9th St NW location, with Stephen Francis becoming President and CEO. Joseph James, Mary's youngest son, later joined after earning a Mechanical Engineering degree and serving as a U.S. Air Force officer.
Southern Utilities opened a second location in Silver Spring, MD in 1969, expanding their inventory and reputation. In 2005, they successfully relocated from Silver Spring to Gaithersburg. Now in its fourth generation, Southern Utilities Co. Inc. continues serving the evolving needs of the HVAC industry.
