Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems – including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants – face higher health risks. These vulnerable groups should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption.

EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791). Elevated lead levels can pose serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from service line materials and household plumbing components.

While West Melbourne is responsible for delivering quality water, they cannot control plumbing material choices in homes. To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption if it has been sitting unused for several hours. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. Additional information about lead in water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
