General Information regarding Municipal Water Contaminants
The sources of tap and bottled water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial pollutants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming

- Organic chemical contaminants: Including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities
