The Water Bureau is responsible for delivering safe potable water to residential, commercial and business customers, while also maintaining infrastructure for adequate firefighting capabilities. The Bureau ensures all water supplies comply with Federal, State and County regulations.
Key responsibilities include water main inspection, leak detection, system maintenance, meter reading/servicing, and installation of new water mains. The Water Bureau distributes approximately 11 billion gallons annually, averaging 29 million gallons daily through a network of over 375 miles of water lines, 4,400+ fire hydrants, three water towers, four pump stations and five disinfectant stations.
The Water Treatment Plant serves as both a pump/disinfectant station and command center for the Water Bureau, monitoring system conditions including flows, pressures, tower elevations and chemical storage levels 24/7, year-round. The facility houses Yonkers' NELAC-approved Water Laboratory where, under the Assistant Water Superintendent's supervision, staff conduct daily testing to ensure compliance with USEPA and NYS Department of Health standards.
Beyond regulatory compliance monitoring, Laboratory Staff respond to customer complaints about water quality and provide routine testing services to Yonkers residents upon request. The lab conducts approximately 24,000 chemical tests and 8,000 bacteriological sample tests annually, while addressing roughly 600 customer concerns per year.
The Water Repair Shop maintains the water infrastructure, responding to approximately 60 water main breaks, 300 fire hydrant repairs, and completing 80 hydrant installations yearly. Staff also install around 650 water meters annually to ensure accurate billing and promote conservation. The team coordinates with other utilities through water main mark-outs to prevent damage during excavations, with emergency services available 24/7. They investigate approximately 900 water leaks and complete 1,600 leak mark-outs in a typical year. The Bureau also implements an aggressive cross-connection control program to prevent potential contamination of the public water supply.
