California Water Utility Companies

The Baldwin Hills water system primarily relies on groundwater sources from the western portion of the Central Basin. This supply is supplemented with water purchased from the Western Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD), an authorized wholesaler of treated potable water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC).

In 2017, the Baldwin Hills water system composition was 66% well water and 34% purchased water from WBMWD. The purchased water is surface water treated at MWDSC's Weymouth Water Treatment Plant. MWDSC utilizes two primary surface water sources: the Sacramento River and the Colorado River, conveyed via the California Aqueduct (State Water Project) and Colorado River Aqueduct.

Treatment processes for this imported surface water include coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. California American Water distributes water throughout Ladera Heights, Windsor Hills, View Park, and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

Since October 2007, MWD has added fluoride to their treated water at an optimized target level of 0.8 mg/L. Local groundwater naturally contains approximately 0.4 mg/L of fluoride. Groundwater supplies are chlorine-disinfected to ensure bacteriological quality throughout the distribution system, while surface water receives chloramine disinfection.
