City of Davis Municipal Water Report Info

The City of Davis originally housed Patwin Native Americans before European settlement began in the 1840s. After disease devastated the native population, many Patwins departed the region during the 1830s. William Wolfskill received a substantial land grant from the Mexican government in 1842, allowing settlement from present-day Vacaville to South Davis.

Jerome and Mary Davis owned a 12,000-acre ranch, much of which later developed into the City of Davis—the namesake of this community. During the 1860s, California Pacific Railroad acquired a large portion of their property. Davis Junction began operating in 1868, serving as a crucial transportation hub connecting the eastern Bay Area to Central Valley farmlands and Sacramento.

A devastating fire in 1916 demonstrated the need for municipal services, leading to Davis' formal incorporation in 1917. The 1920s saw development of local governance structures, including planning commissions and the City Council. Streets were paved and lit, while sewage and water systems were installed during this period.

The University State Farm near Davis, an educational institution operated by UC Berkeley's College of Agriculture, opened in 1908. In 1962, it became a general campus in the University of California system. The following decades witnessed significant population growth, though eventually environmentally-conscious planning took hold.

Today, Davis is a university-oriented city of over 66,000 residents, widely recognized as one of America's most bicycle-friendly communities. The close relationship between students and residents continues to strengthen the distinctive college town atmosphere that has developed over the past century.
