City of Spokane
About Us
The City of Spokane operates seven water wells strategically positioned throughout the area, drawing water directly from the aquifer beneath. Our water is of such high quality that it requires minimal treatment - we simply add chlorine to maintain purity as it travels through our distribution system.
The Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer was formed by Ice Age floods that deposited a thick layer of gravel and river rocks. This natural underground reservoir spans approximately 135 square miles from Pend Oreille Lake in Idaho to the western edge of Spokane, with depths ranging from just a few feet to over 500 feet in certain areas.
Since our community lives directly above our water source, responsible stewardship is essential. We strongly encourage residents to avoid disposing of any substances on the ground or in storm drains that they wouldn't want in their drinking water. For additional information, visit: www.spokaneaquifer.org.
Our water system includes booster stations with powerful pumps that move water from lower elevations to storage tanks and reservoirs at higher elevations. These elevated tanks create the necessary water pressure for residential service. The city maintains over 1,500 miles of water mains, with service lines branching off to individual homes.
To meet community demands, we maintain over 75 million gallons of water storage in reservoirs, with capacity determined by both area usage and fire protection requirements. Throughout the year, our dedicated staff conducts hundreds of water quality tests, repairs infrastructure, and monitors the system 24/7 from our control center to ensure reliable, safe water service.
