In addition to mandatory water quality standards, the EPA and California Department of Drinking Water have established voluntary water quality targets for specific contaminants. These goals are typically set at levels that aren't practically achievable or easily measurable, but they provide important benchmarks for water management practices.

The water quality reports include three main types of goals:

• Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The contaminant level in water below which no known health risks exist, as determined by the EPA.
• Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): The disinfectant level in water below which no known health risks exist, while acknowledging disinfectants' importance for controlling microbial contamination.
• Public Health Goal (PHG): The contaminant level below which no known health risks exist, as established by California EPA.

POTENTIAL CONTAMINANTS IN WATER SOURCES

Sources of municipal water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

Common contaminant categories include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial waste, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
• Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems

All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

1. Why is my water usage so high? It may not be – meter readings could be transposed or difficult to interpret. You might have an undetected leaky toilet or faucet. Contact our office and we'll work with you to investigate the issue.
2. Can I get an extension on my overdue bill? Please call our office – a one-time extension may be granted for special circumstances.
3. What should I do if I experience low water pressure? First check your meter and surrounding area for possible leaks, then contact our office to report the pressure issue in your location.
4. Why do I still have a previous balance when I sent my payment? We might have received it after the due date or perhaps didn't receive it at all. Call our office for assistance resolving this matter.
5. Why is my water appearing discolored? Recent repairs may have allowed air to enter the water line, causing a milky appearance in your water.
