California Water Utility Companies

The Baldwin Hills water system is primarily supplied by groundwater sources from the western Central Basin. This supply is supplemented with water purchased from the Western Basin Municipal Water District. As an authorized wholesaler, the Western Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD) provides potable treated water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC).

In 2017, the Baldwin Hills system consisted of 66% well water and 34% purchased water from WBMWD. The purchased water from WBMWD comes from surface water treated at MWDSC's Weymouth Water Treatment Plant. MWDSC utilizes two natural surface water sources: the Sacramento River and the Colorado River. This water reaches Los Angeles via the California Aqueduct (State Water Project) and the Colorado River Aqueduct.

Treatment processes for this imported surface water include coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. California American Water distributes water to residential and commercial customers throughout Ladera Heights, Windsor Hills, View Park, and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

Since October 2007, MWD has added fluoride to their treated water at an optimized target level of 0.8 mg/L. Our local groundwater naturally contains fluoride at approximately 0.4 mg/L. Groundwater supplies are disinfected with chlorine while surface water is treated with chloramines to ensure bacteriological quality throughout the distribution system.
