About Us
Community groundwater supplies approximately 28 percent of La Verne's water, while the majority (72 percent) is purchased from Three Miles Municipal Water Area (TVMWD), which processes water received from the Metropolitan Water Area of Southern California (MWD). MWD distributes water to roughly 300 cities and unincorporated areas across Southern California, drawing from two primary sources: the Colorado River and the State Water Project.
Basic Information About Water Contaminants
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal and human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, and farming
- Radioactive contaminants that can be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining activities
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
About Lead in Tap Water
Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in water than the general population. Lead levels at your home may be higher than at other residences in the community due to the materials used in your home's plumbing system.
