About Us
Grayslake purchases water from the Central Lake Region Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA), a cooperative formed by the communities it serves: Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Lindenhurst, Mundelein, Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Park, and Lake County representing unincorporated areas of Knollwood, Roundout, Vernon Hills, Wildwood, and Grandwood Park.
Our Advanced Treatment Process
Water is drawn from Lake Michigan and processed at CLCJAWA's Paul M. Neal Water Treatment Facility in Lake Bluff. The facility employs a sophisticated purification system that begins with ozone treatment to eliminate organisms and break down contaminants. The ozone is generated on-site, mixed with the water, and then converted back to oxygen.
Next, a coagulant is added to remove sediment and other particles. After clarification, the water passes through filters containing activated carbon and sand to remove remaining turbidity. Turbidity (water clarity) is constantly monitored as an important indicator of water quality and filtration effectiveness – automatic equipment checks it every 10 seconds, with additional manual laboratory tests twice daily.
The water then undergoes ultraviolet light treatment to neutralize any remaining organisms. Finally, the purified water receives chlorine for protection during distribution, fluoride for dental health, and a small amount of phosphate (a common food additive) that prevents metal leaching from household plumbing systems.
CLCJAWA has maintained Excellence in Water Treatment status for 13 consecutive years, making it the third facility nationwide to achieve this distinction from the Partnership for Safe Water. This voluntary program, partially sponsored by the EPA, holds participants to standards exceeding current regulatory requirements.
