About Us
Green-Taylor Water District purchases water from three primary suppliers who treat surface water. The Green River serves as Greensburg's main source, while Green River and Rio Springs supply Green Lake Valley Water District. Campbellsville uses Green River Reservoir as its source. Each supplier maintains distinct service areas: Greensburg manages the Pikeview Tank area; Campbellsville oversees Summersville, Exotic Y, and Dark Gnat Tank regions; and Green River District serves customers in Pierce and Mell Ridge Tanks areas across Green and Metcalfe Counties.
Each supplier conducts susceptibility assessments, with most areas showing moderate contamination risk. Higher concern zones include transportation corridors, underground storage facilities, agricultural lands, and waste facilities. Detailed Source Water Assessment Programs are available from each supplier – contact our office for their information.
All municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves minerals (sometimes radioactive) and can pick up substances from animal or human activity. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, livestock, or wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals (natural or from runoff, wastewater, oil/gas production, mining)
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential use
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, or septic systems
- Radioactive elements occurring naturally or from resource extraction
EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. Certain populations – including cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly individuals, and infants – may be more vulnerable to contamination. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption.
Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. While we provide quality water, we can't control plumbing component materials. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking, especially if it has been sitting for several hours. For lead concerns, consider testing your water. More information is available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Our suppliers monitor for Cryptosporidium to ensure treatment adequacy. This microbial parasite, found in surface water, was detected in some source water samples but not in finished water. Current testing cannot determine if organisms are viable or capable of causing illness. Infection symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Cryptosporidium requires ingestion to cause disease and may spread through means beyond water.
A Level 1 Assessment is a study to identify potential problems when coliform bacteria are found. Coliforms indicate possible waterborne pathogens or contamination pathways. During the past year, we conducted one required Level 1 assessment and completed two required corrective actions.
