Campbellsville Municipal Water

Our source water originates from Green Water Reservoir in southern Taylor County. The primary intake is located on Smith Ridge at the end of West Main Road. During emergencies, we can also utilize water from City Lake on Lebanon Avenue through our treatment plant. Both Green River Reservoir and City Lake are surface water sources.

This is a summary of our system's susceptibility to contamination according to the Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP). The complete plan is available for review at our office at 10 South Columbia Avenue.

An assessment indicated our overall susceptibility to contamination is generally low. Within the critical protection area of the Green River Reservoir intake, there are four potential high-risk contamination sources, one medium risk, and none ranked low. Areas of concern include row crops, highways, and various forestland, hay fields and pasture lands that could present long-term pollution threats.

The City Reservoir intake area contains fifteen high-risk potential contamination sources, ten medium-ranked sources, and none ranked low. Primary concerns include bridges, culverts, row crops, underground storage tanks, KPDES permitted discharges, and waste generators or transporters.

The Green River Tank water intake is less vulnerable due to its remote location and minimal non-point pollution sources. The City Reservoir intake faces higher temporary risks from limited water flow and numerous contaminant sources, though impact is limited due to its supplementary nature.

All tap water, including bottled water, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Drinking water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage plants, septic systems, livestock operations, or wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals from natural sources, stormwater runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from stormwater runoff, agriculture, or residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, or septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or oil/gas production and mining

EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water to protect public health. Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters drinking water from service line materials and home plumbing components. While we provide quality water, we cannot control the materials in your plumbing. After water sits for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
