Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities. Several types of contaminants may be present in source water:

• Microbial contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife.

• Inorganic contaminants: Naturally-occurring salts and metals or those resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, or farming practices.

• Pesticides and herbicides: These may originate from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage.

• Organic chemical contaminants: Byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems.

• Radioactive contaminants: These can occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining activities.

To ensure safe tap water, the U.S. EPA and State Water Resources Control Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similar regulations exist for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. Tables 1-6 list detected contaminants from recent sampling. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Some contaminants are monitored less frequently as their concentrations rarely change, meaning some data may be over a year old. Any violations are marked with an asterisk with additional information provided elsewhere in this report.

Atwater History
Atwater's community heritage dates back to the late 1800s. Officially incorporated in 1922, the city continues to evolve while honoring its past. The community has been shaped by three major influences: the agricultural industry, Highway 99, and the former Castle Air Force Base – all of which remain significant local landmarks today.

Several excellent historical accounts document Atwater's development. The Atwater Chamber of Commerce website features a concise overview of the city's history. For a more immersive experience, the Atwater Historical Society conducts guided tours with oral histories and photographs at the Bloss Home (1020 Cedar Avenue) – currently the only structure recognized on the State Historical Preservation List. The grounds and adjacent Bloss Park are available for events through the Atwater Community Services Department.
