Virginia Water Utility Companies

The Virginia Division of Health Office of Municipal Water awarded the Public Utilities Department's Water Treatment Facility with the 2016 Excellence in Waterworks Operations and Performance Award.

"Our dedicated team at the Water Treatment Plant works diligently behind the scenes to provide one of the city's most essential services," explained Mike Collins, director of the Public Resources Department. "This recognition reflects their expertise, dedication, and pride in consistently meeting the highest standards for our water quality."

Residents expect clean water whenever they turn on the faucet, but few understand the complex process involved. These operations run continuously throughout the year, day and night. The process begins with water collection from natural sources. Currently, the city utilizes two natural water sources: Dry River and North River. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River will be added as an additional source once infrastructure construction is completed.

Raw water travels through underground pipes to the Water Treatment Plant for purification and disinfection before undergoing multiple safety tests. Once treated to potable standards, water is distributed through pipes to customers or stored in one of nine water tanks positioned throughout the city. These reservoirs serve as backup when consumption exceeds plant production capacity.

While this process may seem straightforward, numerous elements require constant monitoring and management: chemical treatment, mixing procedures, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, drought and weather conditions, water levels, pumping systems, pipes, storage tanks, monitoring devices, sensors, water quality, usage patterns, natural contaminants, 24/7 staffing, and compliance with state and federal regulations.

On a typical day, residents and businesses in the city and parts of Rockingham County consume more than 6.7 million gallons of water. Director Mike Collins noted, "I continue to be impressed with our Water Treatment plant operators and field utility staff and their commitment to protecting water quality throughout our distribution system. This truly represents a team effort."
