California Water Utility Companies

Municipal water supplies come from various natural sources including rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some instances, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances resulting from animal presence or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals, either naturally-occurring or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems

All water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. The City of San Jacinto water sources were assessed in May 2001, October 2004, May 2008 and September 2017. These sources were determined to be most vulnerable to solid waste systems and gas stations, though these activities aren't associated with contaminants detected in the water supply. A complete assessment copy is available upon written request from the City Clerk's office.

To ensure tap water safety, the USEPA and State Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. State regulations also set limits for bottled water contaminants to provide similar public health protection.
