About Us
Larue County Water District sources water from multiple suppliers who manage surface water sources. These providers include:
• Green Lake Valley Water Region (Green River and RJ Springs)
• Hodgenville Water Works (North Fork of Nolin River and Salem Lake)
• Bardstown Municipal Water Section (Sympson Lake and Beech Fork River)
• Campbellsville Municipal Water Program (Oriental River Reservoir and City Reservoir)
• Greensburg (Green Lake) which serves Green/Taylor Water District
Each supplier has conducted contamination susceptibility studies, with most showing average risk levels. High concern areas include transportation corridors, underground storage tanks, agricultural activities, and waste generation sites. Source Water Assessment Plans are available for review at each water provider. For supplier contact information, call our office at 270-325-3242.
All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably contain trace amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Municipal water can contain contaminants from various sources, including:
• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from stormwater runoff or agricultural/residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, or septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants, naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulates bottled water with similar standards. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbes are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.
Information About Lead: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water primarily comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing. While your water utility provides high-quality water, they cannot control the materials used in plumbing components. You can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned, consider having your water tested. For more information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and exposure reduction, visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
